The City Hall has several functions, both political and ceremonial. It is primarily a political office building. Every third Monday, the Stockholm City Council convene in the Council Chamber.

The central management of Stockholm have their offices at the City Hall and approximately 300 people work inside the building.

The City Hall is used for events and representation. The City Hall of Stockholm and Region Stockholm regularly welcome foreign dignitaries and guests to the City Hall. During state visits, a luncheon is often served at the City Hall.

Companies, universities, and organisation are able to rent the Blue Hall and the Golden hall to host banquets, parties, and ceremonies. Of these events, the Nobel banquet held at the City Hall on December 10th each year since 1930 is the most famous.

The City Hall is also popular among tourists, with almost half a million visitors each year.
